Exceptional bass is nearly always the exception in high-end audio. You can buy great midrange, but the only way to get truly accurate bass is to custom tune it to the room.

Follow these instructions in this guide and at the very least you will equal the best bass you have heard reproduced, regardless of price. It’s entirely possible that the process will redefine accurate bass for you, lifting the bar so that what you had considered accurate will now sound boomy and ill-defined. Since this is a vast topic, I’m going to condense it down into a step by step guide so that you can apply this right away.

The advice given here is aimed at home theatre rooms, but most of it can also be applied to two channel music systems.

There are four parts that must all be addressed:
1. The room envelope & bass traps
2. Bass sources
3. Placement
4. Bass management & EQ

In order to reproduce bass accurately, all four require attention. Addressing them all is critical and failure to do so is a serious compromise. This may be difficult in many multi purpose rooms, however, when working with constraints it is a good idea to first entertain the notion of doing all that is possible, rather than dismissing the possibility of improving the room. In investigating the possibilities, creative options can often be found that would otherwise be missed in dismissing options too soon.
